Map assets

A map asset describes a map: its name, author, teams, music and the environments it can be played in. It doesn’t hold the blocks, which are in the Minecraft world.

Field Required Default Description
environments Yes The map’s environments, by name.
mapEffects No None Effects that apply in every environment, such as the map’s name.

A map’s name, author, teams and music are set by map effects in the top-level mapEffects list:

effectType Field Default if missing
map_name mapName Custom
author author Unknown
teams alliesTeam, axisTeam bf:us_airborne, bf:ger_wehrmacht
music_set musicSet europe

An environment is one version of the map, such as day or night, and holds the effects for that version: time of day, weather, sounds and so on. A map needs at least one. When a match starts, one environment is picked at random.

A campaign mission can pick its environment instead, with environment in its game asset.

Field Required Default Description
name Yes The environment’s name. Use the same value as its key in environments.
mapEffects No None Map effects defined directly in this environment.
mapEffectTemplates No None Effect templates placed in this environment.
/assets create maps MyMap Your Name
/assets save-all

This creates MyMap.json with a default environment and its name and author set. Then point a game at it:

/assets edit games dom_mymap map MyMap
Command (after /assets edit maps <name>) What it does
author <author> Sets the author.
musicSet <set> Sets the music set.
teams set <team> <nation> <skin> Sets the Allies or Axis team.
environment list Lists the environments.
environment add <environment> Adds an empty environment.
environment remove <environment> Removes an environment. The last one can’t be removed.

Run /assets save-all afterwards, as these commands don’t save by themselves.

To place effects in the world, use /bf edit inside a match. It pauses the match, switches you to creative and gives you the map effect wands. Changes made with the wands save straight away. See Map effects.
